Free Iron-On Transfer Maker is a browser-based tool for laying out custom iron-on / heat-transfer designs to print at home. For t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags, tea towels, and onesies. Upload your own artwork or add built-in icons and text, then export a print-ready PDF. Because iron-on designs must print reversed, this page turns Mirror on by default. Leave it on for light-fabric transfer paper and HTV vinyl, and switch it off for dark / opaque transfer paper. Your designs stay in your browser.
🔁 Mirror is ON for this tool. That's correct for light-fabric transfer paper and HTV vinyl. Using dark / opaque transfer paper? Turn Mirror off in the Extras section before you print.
An iron-on transfer is a design you press onto fabric with heat. There are two common routes: printable transfer paper (you print your design on special paper, then iron or heat-press it onto the garment) and heat-transfer vinyl (HTV) (you cut a solid-color design on a cutting machine, weed it, then press it). This tool lays out and prints designs for the transfer-paper route and exports cut-ready PNGs for the HTV route.
For light-fabric transfer paper and for HTV vinyl: yes. The design must print or cut reversed so it reads correctly after pressing. This tool turns Mirror on by default on this page, so you do not have to think about it. The exception is dark / opaque transfer paper. See the next question.
Turn Mirror off when you use dark-fabric (opaque) transfer paper. That paper has an opaque white backing and is applied design-side up, so you print it right-reading (normal). Use the Mirror toggle in the tool's Extras section to switch it off. Rule of thumb: light-fabric paper and HTV vinyl = mirror on; dark / opaque transfer paper = mirror off.
Transfer paper is made for a specific printer type. inkjet or laser, and they are not interchangeable. Buy the type that matches your printer. Both come in light-fabric and dark-fabric versions. This tool just prints your layout; you choose the paper.
Home inkjet and laser printers do not print white ink. On light-fabric transfer paper the unprinted areas stay clear, so white or light artwork takes on the fabric color. If you need true white, use dark / opaque transfer paper (which has a white base) or cut white HTV vinyl instead.
Follow the paper or vinyl maker's exact settings, since they vary. In general: pre-press the garment to remove moisture, position the design, then apply firm even heat (a household iron on the hottest no-steam setting, or a heat press around 350–375°F) for the stated time. Let it cool, then peel. Some papers peel hot, some cold, so check the label.
Printable transfer paper reproduces full-color artwork and photos. You print it on your home printer. HTV (heat-transfer vinyl) is solid-color sheet vinyl you cut on a machine, weed the excess, and press. It is more durable and great for text, logos, and layered single colors. For HTV, export the transparent PNG and bring it into your cutting software.
Wait at least 24 hours after pressing before the first wash. Turn the garment inside out, wash cold on a gentle cycle, and avoid harsh detergents. Tumble dry low or hang dry. High dryer heat is the fastest way to crack or peel a transfer. Do not iron directly over the design.
Cotton and cotton/poly blends work best. Polyester works with low-temperature vinyl or paper rated for it. Avoid nylon and any fabric that cannot take the press temperature, and skip waterproof or treated finishes. Always test on a scrap or hidden seam first.
Yes. It is the cheapest insurance you have. Print a small swatch, press it onto a scrap of the same fabric, then check the edges, peel, and wash it once before committing to the finished shirt or bag. Heat, dwell time, and pressure vary by iron and press, so a quick test tells you whether to nudge the temperature up or press a little longer before you risk the piece you actually care about.
